Qual 5th – Finished 3rd
Qual 3rd – Finished 3rd
At the season mid-point, Archie Hamilton (20, Basingstoke) has moved up to second in the Championship after stepping back on the podium at Oulton Park.
Qualifying and both races took place today with wet and dry periods throughout the day adding to the mix. In the dry, Archie qualified 5th for race one and third for race two in the twenty minute session.
In race one Archie nearly had a disaster when he got swallowed by a tangle of cars at the hairpin pushing him back through the field, but a red flag because of an accident and a sudden downpour meant a restart from his original grid slot. With the rain clearing, Archie went for the restart on dry tyres but the wet track made driving on slicks a challenge. Two laps from the end, with as much of a dry line as possible, Archie went on a charge and managed to pass Kourosh Khani and Callum Bowyer to take third place and claim another podium.
The start for race two went well from third, with Archie close to catching the car ahead when the red flags reappeared. On the restart Archie’s clutch slipped and he rolled slightly, attracting a drive through penalty. He came out of the pits in 16th place and over the four remaining laps regained eight places to cross the line in eighth place.
“It’s been a hard intense day and I feel as though I’ve driven my socks off. I would prefer to be leading from the start to the flag but making up places in the way I’ve done today is very rewarding. I’m learning to be consistent and to stay out of trouble as much as possible and that’s shown with the Championship table. Being second at the mid-way points isn’t bad but I’m going to be challenging for the lead when we race in July.”
Provisional Championship standings: 1) Josh Webster 142, 2) Archie Hamilton 125, 3) Kieran Vernon 123, 4) James Thorp 119, 5) Dino Zamparelli 113.
Archie next races on 23rd & 24th July at Croft, Yorkshire. For further information and high resolution images please contact Pippa Neilson, 07968 564660 or [email protected]
